By EditorAlex Frangos reports on the presidential race. HuckabeeMike Huckabee is a maverick on some economic issues, striking a more populist tone than his Republican rivals,Locaste greece, as noted in today’s Wall Street Journal. He calls for a national sales tax to replace the federal income tax. And he often laments the disconnect between corporate profits and wage growth that has characterized this decade’s expansion. On one important economic issue — solving the mortgage mess — the former Arkansas governor is cautious about any big intervention. “Government’s got to be very careful. They can’t come in and bail people out,” he said in an interview in Iowa Wednesday. A bailout, he said, would help people who bought homes bigger than they could afford, while alienating homeowners who stayed within their means.Huckabee said he’s “in full support of the Bush administration’s strategy,” to prevent foreclosures by getting lenders and mortgage servicers to voluntarily renegotiate some troubled loans. “But look, when two million people are threatened with the loss of homes — homeownership is one of the real keys to the American dream — it’s one of the primary reasons that you see this anxiety,” he said, referring to opinion polls that show voters view the economy as a top concern. While the leading Democratic candidates have called for tighter regulation and targeted government injections of capital into the housing finance market, the Republicans have mostly endorsed the administration’s plans. Huckabee’s chief rival, Mitt Romney, talked about housing Monday, indicating more might need to be done if the housing market doesn’t improve.By EditorAmy Schatz reports from from Des Moines, Iowa, puma maratonki, on the presidential race.EdwardsFresh off a 36-hour bus tour marathon across Iowa, former Sen. John Edwards took the stage last night in front of a few thousand people (the campaign said it distributed 3,000 tickets) in West Des Moines with Hoosier rocker John Mellencamp for a pre-caucus rally.Desperate Housewives star James Denton helped introduce the two Johns with actress Jean Smart joking that “When you heard someone from Desperate Housewives would be here you got the ugly one…but you also got the Smart one.”Mellencamp took to the stage first, for a five-song acoustic set including “Pink Houses,” and “Small Town.” He told the under 30 set in the crowd that they needed to get ready to lead the country but that, “us people over 30, we’re not done yet.”Half-joking about “$100 a barrel for me and you” and other asides during his 20-minute set, Mellencamp said he’s been friends with the former North Carolina senator for years and urged the audience to go out and caucus for him Thursday night. Mellencamp ended his set with a sing-along to “This is Our Country,” a theme song adopted by the Edwards camp months ago (although they often play “Pink Houses, roger vivier shoes,” too) “I think John Edwards is the guy who can deliver on this stuff” in the song, Mellencamp said.
