By Neil King Jr.Indiana Rep. Mike Pence decided against a 2012 run for the White House, disappointing social conservatives who had encouraged him to seek the Republican nomination but leaving open a likely bid for the Indiana governor’s office.Mr. Pence’s staunch stance against abortion and gay marriage and his votes against a number of big-ticket government programs, even during the Bush administration, made him a favorite of many social conservatives, some of whom launched a “draft Pence” campaign earlier this month. But in a letter to supporters, Mr. Pence said that after long consideration, he and his wife had decided against a run for the White House. “My heart is in Indiana,” he said. The 51-year-old lawmaker and former radio host said he would decide “later this year” what to do next, but it is all but certain that he will run for governor. The current governor, Republican Mitch Daniels, cannot run for re-election under Indiana’s election laws.In an interview Thursday, Mr. Daniels said he could not remember a time in the state’s history when the door was so wide open for a candidate like Mr. Pence. The current Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman has decided against running, while the state’s most powerful Democrat, former Sen. Evan Bayh, has also ruled it out.Indiana’s Democrats suffered sharp losses in November, and no Democrat in Indiana now holds statewide office.By Patrick O’ConnorSen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat known for a campaign commercial in which he shot a bullet through a cap-and-trade bill, got a a seat on the Energy & Natural Resources Committee. And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke can breathe a sigh of relief that first-year Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), a tea party favorite, isn’t on the panel that oversees the central bank. Those are just a few of the takeaways from committee assignments that were just announced this afternoon in the Senate. Six freshmen Republicans won spots on the Appropriations Committee, which doles out federal spending, roger vivier flats, including Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, a favorite of the tea party who promised to cut spending during his successful campaign to oust Democrat Russ Feingold. Most are seasoned legislators, including Indiana Sen. Dan Coats who returns to the chamber after more than a decade away, and the three House members who got a promotion. This being the Senate there weren’t a lot of surprises. Here’s the Republican list:AppropriationsThad Cochran, Miss.Mitch McConnell, Ky.Richard Shelby, Ala. In an op-ed in the New York Times and on ABC’s “Good Morning America” this morning, Hill defended herself from renewed accusations by Thomas that she had fabricated testimony for political purposes. Both in print and over the airwaves, she underscored a broader concern: His attack in a newly released memoir could “become the model of how we can react to bad workplace behavior.” (See Hill’s GMA interview.)Thomas, in his book “My Grandfather’s Son” and in an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” Sunday, characterized Hill as a “mediocre” employee at the Education Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. At one point, the Supreme Court justice described her as “my most traitorous adversary” and called her Senate testimony “extravagant fiction concocted so as to have the maximum possible impact on the public.”Hill, a professor at Brandeis University, wrote in the op-ed piece that Thomas “has every right to present himself as he wishes” in the book and “may even be entitled to feel abused by the confirmation process that led to his appointment to the Supreme Court. But I will not stand by silently and allow him, in his anger, to reinvent me.”She said she couldn’t think of anything she could have done differently to ease the confirmation process, and said her testimony about Thomas’s numerous inappropriate sexual remarks was truthful. “What I described really did happen, and what I’ve learned is that it’s happened to many women in the workplace.” She said she lacked “the imagination to come up with the things that occurred… and I certainly wouldn’t put myself in a position of testifying before the whole world about them.” Another thing Hill made clear: Thomas’s wife, Virginia, isn’t going to get the apology she asked for on “60 Minutes.”
