The preparations for the mass prisoner release and the handover of Sergeant Shalit – who was seized by Hamas militants inside Israel more than five years ago and has been held at an undisclosed location in Gaza ever since – involves a complex series of border crossings and exchanges with intermediaries, including Egyptian officials and the International Red Cross. Details of the plan were still being negotiated in Cairo as late as Sunday between Israel’s special envoy David Meidan, Egyptian security and intelligence officials and Hamas. From there his identity will be verified and he will be taken to the nearby Kerem Shalom military base in Israel, where he will undergo a medical examination and call his parents. He is then expected to be flown to an Israeli Air Force base, where his parents will be waiting, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak. If all goes to plan, after further medical checks, he and his parents will be flown to their house in the Galilee and are expected to arrive by late afternoon Tuesday. Fearful that any complication could derail the process, Sergeant Shalit’s parents released a statement to those families challenging the deal in the High Court, puma maratonki, urging them to reconsider. ’'Nobody knows what the impact of any delay, or any change, even the smallest, nike obuv dmska, in the terms would be,’‘ they said in Haaretz newspaper. ’'Any change or delay in the deal could endanger Gilad’s life.’‘ Those petitioning the High Court include the Schijveschuurder family, who lost five loved ones in the 2001 Sbarro pizza cafe bombing that killed 15 people in Jerusalem, and Ron Karmal, whose daughter was killed in a bus bombing in Haifa. They do not want the Palestinians involved in those crimes to be released from jail. The petition to the High Court of Justice is expected to be rejected by a panel of judges. Early on Tuesday morning, the 477 prisoners will be taken from the Ketziot and Hadarim prisons to two locations – a border area near Egypt and the Ofer Military Base, roger vivier shoes, a military prison and court near the West Bank city of Ramallah – where Israeli police and prison officials will wait for the ’'sign of life’‘ signal that indicates Sergeant Shalit has been safely handed over. From here, the process gets even more complicated, according to information released from the Israel Ministry for Justice, with 477 prisoners being released to their homes in Gaza (131), east Jerusalem and the West Bank (108 – though some with restrictions on their movement) and deported overseas to undisclosed locations (39). A further 17 will be sent to Gaza for three years, 144 sent to Gaza for an undisclosed period of time, five will return to their homes in Israel, while 26 female prisoners will be released to their homes in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, one sent to Jordan and one to Gaza, the ministry said. Three countries – including Qatar and Turkey – had agreed to take some of the deported prisoners, Hamas Political Bureau deputy director Mousa Abu Marzuk told Al-Hayat, while other reports indicate that Syria may also take some. Meanwhile, preparations are under way in both Gaza and the West Bank for celebrations to greet the prisoners as they return home, with a reception planned in the Al Muqata compound in Ramallah and Gaza City’s main square, officials said. As part of the deal, a further 550 prisoners will be released in the coming months.
